Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the membrane (lining) that covers the outer surface of most of our body’s organs. It commonly develops in the tissue covering the lungs.
Over 2,500 people in the UK are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year, and it is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos: a soft, greyish-white material that was widely used in building construction up until the late 1990s.
Symptoms can include: pain in the chest or lower back, shortness of breath, a fever, night sweats, a persistent cough and unexplained weight loss.
If you currently work or have ever worked in an environment which exposes you to large amounts of asbestos (refurbishment, maintenance and other similar trades) and you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may be entitled to compensation.
